Just heard about the tragic events in Tucson. The shooter took the lives of at least five people, including a federal judge and a young girl, and left many others wounded. Sadly my initial reaction wasn't one of surprise, but rather resignation toward the rise of hysteria we've been seeing from the Right. It is not just a few loons in the Tea Party, its Republican representatives of congress and the top right-wing talking heads who are calling for second amendment remedies. Now that someone has taken them at their word, expect to see all sorts of squirming about not having any responsibility for what happened. I prefer the what Clarence Dupnik, the Pima County Sheriff, had to say;
... people tend to poo-poo this business about all the vitriol that we hear inflaming the American public by people who make a living off of doing that. That may be free speech. But it's not without consequences.
Just in case you've forgotten:
Predictions on how the right will spin things [mock paper scissors]
What Violent Right Wing Rhetoric? [little green footballs]
And the Trolls have already started coming out. [Yikes]
