Lunar Conjunction with Jupiter

Click on the image to see the large version. The brightest spot is our Moon. Jupiter can be seen slightly above, and to the right of the Moon. It is clearly visible to the unaided eye. We think the bright spot on the lower left is Mars. To the unaided eye it appears to have a red tint.

Andy vs. the Ocean

Over the holidays we drove out to California with the two dogs. Being born in a plains state and living in Colorado, Andy has never seen the ocean before.

He's seen the lakes and rivers of the Rockies, but wanted nothing to do with getting wet. On top of that this water moved. He wasn't convinced this was a good idea.

And then he saw the sand pipers feeding along the surf. that's all it took to get him over his apprehension concerning the ocean. It was still a big shock when we tried to take a drink and it was salty.
