Draw Muhammad Day

In response to the recent censoring of a South Park episode concerning censorship, today, May 20, was declared Draw Muhammad Day to show that the blogger community isn't going to be cowed by threats of violence over free speech.

There are those who have whined that this is disrespectful to Muslims and amounted to collective punishment. They assume that any depictions must by definition be disrespectful. The above image is taken from a larger work produced by Medieval Muslim artists. In fact, despite claims to the contrary, the prohibition against depicting Mohammed did not arise until the 16th or 17th century.

Update: Looks like the link to www.drawmuhammadday.com is broken. Here's another to a facebook page dedicated to the day.

Count me among the whiners. I know it's not very reactionary of me, but there you have it.
