The gear has helped our soldiers and Marines to become very lethal. The era of massed infantry relying on conscripts is long gone. We are returning to an era where war fighting is the province of a smaller cadre of trained professionals who now how to wield the expensive tools of their trade. In the middle ages, it took a certain amount of land to support the horse, armor, lances and swords needed by a fighting knight, so there was little mass warfare. Economically speaking, our age seems similar, except that we have leveraged national economies to support our armies, not just the local feudal one.
