4th of July

Why do we, as a nation, think that the only people who defend our freedoms, the only people who protect our rights, or the only people who are willing to sacrifice to keep the United States a nation of opportunity for all carry guns? Have they not heard of Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr., Cesar Chavez, or the millions of hard-working Americans who fought for better wages better working conditions, and a better future for their children? Have they not heard of the women who were tied down and force fed so that their sisters, mothers, and daughters could vote? Or of James Chaney, Michael Schwerner, and Andrew Goodman, the three civil rights workers who were tortured and killed simply because they wanted to see that blacks had an equal opportunity to vote? None of these people carried a gun or had the protection of a badge or body armor and yet they stood up for what America is and, more importantly, can be. Take a moment and consider these often forgotten defenders of your freedom as you unwrap your flag and get ready to celebrate the Fourth of July.
