More than carpet, clothing really shows dog fur. Our first dog has black hair which doesn't show up on black clothing. But Andy's fur is very light, so the strategy of dark clothing no longer works. We're resigned to carrying around a roll of masking tape to clean our cloths before going out.

There's a special roller you can buy that has removable layers of sticky tape on it.
