I always thought that the water in southern California tasted like crap, starting the end of this month this will be literally the case.
... here in Orange County, pulling the lever will be the start of a long, intense process to purify the sewage into drinking water — after a hard scrubbing with filters, screens, chemicals and ultraviolet light and the passage of time underground.

I don't understand this from you. Every time I turn on the tap I have a mental image of the Colorado river or some such. Frankly, I'd like to see more water reclamation. How come you don't support this? Did I miss something in the fine print?
By the way, I heard on the sports talk station that local environmentalists are opposing a possible Chargers' stadium along the coast for the sake of coastal wetlands. If that's true, I might just donate some time to help the protests. Our coastal wetlands are almost gone, thanks to overdevelopment.

Ya, but unless its distilled, I don't want to associate my drinking water with what's being flushed. Reclaimed water is great for other uses, but there is some question about mixing it into the drinking water.
As you say the real issue is over-development. If they hadn't built the inland like there was no tomorrow there'd be a lot less need to do crazy things like desalination.
Agreed. I'm not a big fan of desalinzation, either. Lots of marine life is very sensistive to salt concentrations. That's how some coral reefs die back after torrential rains.
